Government Arts College, Trichy-22, situated near Thuvakudi is a co-educational institution established in the year 1973 and this has become a special and significant place for rural students from the nearby areas.

Established with a clear vision to cater to the academic needs of the children from the families of farmers and economically and socially underprivileged people around BHEL, the college has taken long strides in the arena of education, inviting a beeline of students from nearby districts also. Making a modest beginning by introducing a 2 pre-university programs in 1973 – 74, the college has evolved into a ‘much sought after institution’ in four decades and presently it offer 17 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In addition to disseminating knowledge and making the students academically competent, the college aims at harnessing their latent potentials so that they become fit to meet the demands and stiff competitions in the job market.

English Literature, Tamil Literature, History, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Computer Application, Maths, Electronics, Business Administration, Visual Communication, Commerce,Co-operation, Social Work, Political Science, Psychology, Journalism, are the regular courses offered at the Under Graduate level and are also offered at the Post Graduate and Research level. Computer Literacy Program is offered for a year to all the first-year students to enable them technically competent. Apart from regular classroom teaching, the various disciplines function actively by conducting competitions and awareness programmes, seminars and workshops. Resource Persons/experts from outside are invited to address the students.

NSS, YRC, RRC, and Rotaract Club expose the students to the social responsibilities constantly through regular camps and awareness programs. Most of the students hail from financially and socially backward sections and are first generation learners and inherently diffident. The dedicated team of professors with high academic standards strives diligently to chisel and shape the learners so as to ensure them a bright future. These academicians with their qualifications and rich experience endeavour to translate the dreams of the parents and students into reality.

The campus is abuzz with activities in the Fine Arts Association and Sports. The Career Guidance Cell conducts training programs on interview skills and communication skills and also interacts with companies around for recruitment. The learners are exposed to communication sessions through the language lab. Physical fitness is given due emphasis through indoor and outdoor games and the college has sportspersons at the Zonal / National levels.

The growing needs in infrastructure are met by the philanthropy of BHEL and industrialists who evince interest in the growth of the college. In the four decades of existence, 38 Principals have headed the institution, enhancing the educational and ethical ambience. Many Principals and senior Professors have rendered yeoman service during their tenure.

The college has been accredited with B+ by NAAC in 2005. The institution takes pride in submitting the Re-accreditation Report for the academic years spanning from 2006-2011. The development and achievement of the college with respect to the seven criteria identified by the NAAC are submitted for perusal.

The college was reaccredited with B grade by NAAC in 2014 with 2.35 points. In the same year, new courses such as Political Science, Journalism, Visual Communication, Electronics, Psychology, Geography, Social Science and International Business were introduced.

In the year 2017, the college was upgraded as GRADE I College.
